Communicators work in a universe of competent responders.
Effective communication always requires good relationships with other responders, and the ultimate success of any response is often dependent on many of these people’s capabilities. It has been my pleasure to work with leaders in the field of crisis response and communications.

Hiring Marc to help start and manage PIER was one of the best decisions I ever made. As the first employee of this startup in late 1999, Marc was directly involved in all aspects of building, marketing and supporting one of the earliest ever cloud-based business products. PIER went on to become the global leader in communication management technologies.
Marc is very bright, very quick witted (given to punning!), and fun to be with. His dedication to his customers, anticipating their needs and exceeding their expectations is unmatched. The loyalty he demonstrates is routinely returned by his clients. Because of his 20+ years experience in dealing directly with the communication leaders of numerous global companies and federal, state and regional government jurisdictions and agencies, Marc has become a true thought-leader in the areas of emergency communication, crisis communication and reputation management.
His role with his clients goes far beyond assisting them with the complex technologies needed to inform and engage the media, stakeholders and the public. He is a top-notch strategic advisor, helping these leaders and their teams to come to grips with the realities of what I call the “black hat” world, where fast and direct communication is essential.
One passion that Marc demonstrates over and over is providing leadership in the thinking of employees and organizational change needed to adequately prepare organizations to respond effectively when the world’s attention falls on them. Those clients fortunate enough to engage Marc will find in-depth expertise and a real commitment to their success in the ever-challenging world of crisis communication.

As the Executive Director of the The Firs and all of its programs for kids, the last thing I want is for something bad to happen to one of our campers . Tragically, last summer we suffered the drowning of a camper during one of our Camp Firwood High School camps.
We were immediately faced with a number of critical decisions and responses all at once. Sorting through all of this in the midst of our own personal emotions was very daunting. One of the first phone calls I made was to my friend, Marc Mullen. I knew he was well versed in dealing with this kind of situation and I sought his counsel.
Marc’s support via several conversations during and after this tragedy was very helpful. He gave calm and clear advice as to how to proceed on a number of fronts including communication to the media, campers and parents. He gave us good perspective on things I doubt we would have known to do or say, which proved very important in navigating our way through that day and beyond.
Marc not only has the right experience but the right demeanor to be effective in this role.

I have had the opportunity to know and work closely with Marc Mullen for 5 years. He is amongst the most talented, dedicated and thoughtful persons I have had the chance to work with. He is a man of high integrity and loyalty and a leader. As I met with several users of our PIER system; what really made an impression on me was how much these clients respected Marc for his knowledge and service over the years
I worked most closely with Marc on efforts to upgrade the PIER program referenced by Gerald in his testimonial. Over and over again, I asked Marc to take on very difficult challenges. He did so very effectively with dedication and compassion. Eventually, as a result of a strategic review of our company, the decision was made to focus on providing consulting services rather than software. Hence, Marc and his team lost their jobs due to no fault of their own.
Recently we have brought Marc back as an outside consultant and I look forward to continuing to work with him in the future.

“In a crisis, there’s very little time to effectively communicate to an affected, usually aggrieved public. Yet what you say at such a time is as important as what you do. TransMontaigne recognized the need to develop both an effective communication platform and process for communicating in a crisis and we reached out for industry leaders to help us.
We retained Marc Mullen to write a Crisis Communication Plan that would support dispersed terminals in several states, provide communication guidance for different terminals with different community sensitivities while supporting effective coordination with response agencies in each location. He delivered a coherent Plan that provides communication guidance and policies, comprehensive communication materials for each location and Quick Guides for immediate and effective use. He also crafted content that greatly supports our use of the crisis communication platform TransMontaigne has subscribed to.
We got more than a Plan for our money. We got Marc’s expertise in integrating our Plan, Platform, Policy and People. We’re now prepared to respond and communicate effectively.”
